![]() I don't even remember what it was called at this point. When going into college in 2002, I was lucky enough to use AutoCAD 2002, which was amazing at the time. Then we moved onto Solidworks, where I've been ever since, and that was the biggest game changer. Is draftsight free for free#Īfter getting Solidworks, I realized they had created Draftsight, an ironically close version of Autodesk's AutoCAD, for free usage. I use it from time to time for simple 2D sketches, but very rarely anymore. I just updated it and got an e-mail saying this was the last year it is offered for free. ![]() Why, may I ask? Is there something valuable about the program I'm not seeing? I know Solidworks is supposed to be gearing up for the 3DExperience but haven't looked into it much and, if I understand correctly, it is still a few years away from being the main product. So, for those of you who may know more about it, why is Draftsight changing to a paid program? I feel it'll quickly obsolete itself unless there's something I'm not using it for that's really important. The same morons who pay a premium for inferior Apple products, probably. ![]() And there are literally millions of those. Without even going so far as paying MORE for less, let's look at another example. A flagship LG phone is clearly inferior to a flagship Samsung phone, but they still sell it. (unless they plan on selling Draftsight for more, in which case, see the Apple example) Probably for less money than the Samsung, which 100% mimics the comparison between Draftsight and ACAD. Regardless, it's a potential revenue stream. There should be zero surprise that Dassault has decided to monetize it after this long. I'd even be hard pressed to call it "shady". You may not find it valuable, but plenty of people do, and they will pay for it. Considering Dassault has invested a significant amount of money in developing the software, this is a good business decision. With all of that said, I don't use Draftsight. Never have, never will.ĭassault has invested a significant amount of money in developing the software. Even if they haven't been updating it much, how long do you think it takes to program something like that? It's not like they just took AutoCAD's code, changed the UI and re-shipped it. Many, many hours of time were spent creating that program. How much money would you need to invest in software before you'd want to make that money back? 10 million? 1 million? 100 thousand? I'm sure if you spent even 10 hours coding Draftsight, you'd like to be paid for that time. Why should Dassault be any different?Īs for your other question, I use SolidWorks. Unless the DWG or DXF is really heavy, it works just fine in SolidWorks sketch/drawing environments. I just prefer the constraint based nature of SolidWorks sketching over any 2D CAD software. ![]() Feels a hundred times more intuitive to me. I've never learned native 2D CAD, and in my 8 years of working full time with SolidWorks, have never had to. Not saying 2D CAD doesn't have its place, and its not a better solution than SW sketch or drawing environments in certain cases, just saying I've never personally run across one yet, so I can't suggest an alternative. I just use SolidWorks. When it comes to 2D drafting and 3D modeling, DraftSight is one of the most popular and widely used software packages. With DraftSight, you can create, edit, view, and markup various kinds of 2D and 3D files. One of the primary reasons behind this software package’s popularity is that it was free. However, following a significant upgrade of the software, Dassault systems, its developers, now only offer a paid version of DraftSight, beginning with the 2019 version. In addition, all free versions of the software will seize to operate from the 1st of January, 2020.įollowing this development, many DraftSight users are now on the lookout for affordable alternatives. Also, some designers need the functionality of DraftSight but cannot afford the price. As a result of these factors, there has been an increase in the demand for affordable alternatives to DraftSight. In this guide, we’ve compiled a list of the top five DraftSight alternatives available. We will be exploring and comparing their prices, uses, and functionality. There are various free CAD software available. ![]()
